Looking for Kid-Friendly Search Engines?

by

cute baby poutingIf you are searching for a kid-safe search engine, my initial reaction is “What an oxymoron!” Seriously, search engines like those do exist, at least that is what they claim.

How do you know if an SE is safe for your kid? Here are some features that you should look for:

1. Fun graphics and flash images

2. Parental filters avoiding results about porn, violence and other non-kid-friendly content

3. Emphasis on educational content or homework help

Most of these search engines are meta search engines. Meta-search engines get results from many other search engines.

Here is a list of kid-friendly search engines:

Ask for Kids

It offers answers to questions relevant to keywords typed in. AskforKids also suggest other results from other search engines predominantly from Fact Monster.

Dib Dab Doo

Another kid and teen-safe search engine that acquires content from more than 2 million websites.

Kids Click

It contains more than 5,000 websites as edited by librarians.

Study Buddy

AOL.com’s search engine for kids looking for homework help. But it keeps on showing time-outs as of this moment.

Yahooligans

One of the most feature-packed kid-friendly search engine from Yahoo!

Zoo.com

Pulls out content from Google, Yahoo!, Wikipedia and news from ABC, Fox, and Yahoo! News.

However, responsible parents should not rely on just what these search engines promise, constant monitoring of your kids’ online activities is still a necessity.

Hey thanks for that link! My daughter is 3 and loves disney.com and noggin.com but I have had a tough time finding more resources that are safe for her to visit. In fact, I am creating a webpage for her so her home page has easy to find stuff that she likes :-)

Wow! I was a teacher in the past and this would be a very helpful and and safe tool I could have show the kids. It is so easy for a child to misspell a word for one or site and it lead the child to a sex oriented or mature site. This is a wonderful idea and I will be sure to spread the news around:) Thank you! Now if only they had a child friendly myspace! hmmmmm? :)

    Babylinda,

I hope Myspace takes note of that.
